When arriving by air, expect to pay around $40 U.S. dollars for taxi service to any property within Cancun’s Hotel Zone. Taxi drivers do not expect to be tipped, but rounding up is a nice gesture when service is good. Most establishments, including hotels, restaurants and tour operators, do accept U.S. dollars, but it’s also a good idea to have some Mexican pesos on-hand for smaller purchases. Credit cards are accepted in larger establishments, but always inquire first. Note that gratuities are expected in most restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
You must present a valid passport to enter Mexico. Those arriving by air must also purchase a tourist card (known as an FM-T). This is generally included in your plane ticket fare. Visitors who are planning to drive can buy a tourist card at the Mexico border crossing, as well as any Mexican consulate or tourism office.
