About

Slice of Humboldt Pie and Local Cider Bar is a fabulous place to stop for those that love everything sweet and savory about pie. The location prepares everything in-house it makes including roasting the chickens each day for their incredible chicken pot pies and peeling the apples they use. They offer options ranging from meat to vegan and even gluten-free options. The Local Cider Bar is a separate company, but they share the space and offer some of the best craft ciders you will find in the area. There’s wine, too.

Our Experience at Slice of Humboldt Pie & Local Cider Bar

An unassuming building that’s beautiful inside, the Slice of Humboldt Pie and Local Cider Bar are located at 828 I Street in Arcata. They are open on Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 8 pm. If you are looking for a meal, stop in. They also offer unbaked and frozen options to take home with you for a meal later in the week.

Good to Know

The menu changes with the seasons. Thanks to their use of local ingredients, you can expect the menu to be in constant flux (just more reason to visit more than once). If you are looking for something gluten-free, just ask. They have pieces with a gluten-free crust and will make you one that fits your needs.

It’s fantastic to choose a sweet pie and then add some fresh vanilla whipped cream to it. This is a must for many of these pies when you want something that is totally over the top. The cream is whipped in-house and is full of flavor, unlike anything out of the can in your fridge.

The family-size pot pies need to be ordered at least an hour in advance if you want them to be hot.

What’s on the Menu

The menu includes a range of options divided into options like hand pies and sweet pies. There are also pot pies that are a full meal and salads for those who are looking for something more vegetable-friendly.

When I visited, I tried a few options from each. Their hand pies are fantastic. Choose from roasted veggies, pulled pork and green chili, and a spicy hot wing version. One of the best options is the Chilean potato which is made with corn and mild peppers that have been sautéed with some spice. It also has cheese and potato in it to help make it truly a meal.

For a sweet treat, stop in for a slice of sweet pie. You can buy a whole one to take home, too. Options include the Derby, which is a boozy version that has bourdon, chocolate chips, walnuts, and a rich, full body flavor. You can also choose peanut butter fudge, buttermilk, or the turtle pie. You may want to grab chocolate silk or blueberry pie. We tried the traditional apple, which was stacked high with fresh spicy apples. You can add ice cream and whipped cream too.

In pot pies, the menu is bursting with options, including traditional chicken pot pie (but a whole lot fresher than I remember as a child) as well as a veggie pot pie. We tried the chicken Alfredo pot pie that comes in a 5-inch individual pie crush. It has chicken breast, broccoli and potatoes, and the richest of Alfredo sauces.

You also have to check out the drinks, from the craft cider to the wines. You will also find some fantastic other options, including teas on the menu like the Lord Bergamot, a black tea with a superior flavor to any earl grey.

The Local Cider Bar

The Local Cider Bar is a fantastic venue next door. It offers 17 cider options along with 2 wines and 3 beers. They also carry kombucha. While the tap is always changing, you are sure to find some excellent choices to choose from, as we did. The 2 Towns Bad Apple Cider and Wandering Aengus Anthem Cherry Cider are some outstanding choices overall here.

They also offer a mixed green salad and a fruit and walnut salad. Both of these are perfect as a whole meal themselves, especially when you add the roasted chicken to them, but you can easily enjoy these alongside your dinner, too.

Our Suggestions

If you are looking for something hearty, go with the Cheese Steak hand pie. It is packed with grass-fed steak, green bell peppers, and onions and then filled with provolone cheese. One of the best sweet pies is the lemon raspberry. It is so rich and so fresh that it is hard to say no to it.

You definitely want to take something home with you, and we recommend the pot pies. They are the perfect meal for a weekday, busy night when you want something that is filling before heading back to your private rental. They are perfect for cold weather, too.
